Field Intern, Megan Jansky shares her experiences working on SPC Construction's Hannah Street and PS-SI Pump Stations.
The construction industry is all around us, shaping the infrastructure we depend on every day—often without us even realizing it. Field Intern Megan Jansky, a Staten Island native, is getting a firsthand look at the infrastructure that supports the community she grew up in, gaining valuable experience in how these essential systems are designed, built, and maintained to keep daily life moving.
This summer, Megan is assigned to the Hannah Street and PS-SI Pumping Station Projects, which encompass four sewage pumping stations currently in various phases of demolition, renovation, and reconstruction. These projects are vital to the people of Staten Island, helping ensure the borough’s infrastructure can continue to serve and support the community for years to come.
Currently a Mechanical Engineering student at Quinnipiac University, Megan has enjoyed learning about the realities of the construction industry beyond the classroom. While many of the collaborative and problem-solving skills she developed in school translate to the jobsite, she has also gained valuable insight into the challenges unique to construction, including scheduling constraints, unforeseen conditions, and project delays.
Her day-to-day responsibilities include taking measurements, observing jobsite progress, communicating with vendors and subcontractors, and reviewing project drawings. Through these experiences, she has developed a deeper understanding of what a career in engineering looks like and how projects move from planning to execution.
Megan's interest in engineering began while growing up in New York City and watching the constant construction taking place around her. Curious about what was happening behind the scenes, she was drawn to the field and the people responsible for building and maintaining the city's infrastructure. Her experience at Hannah Street and PS-SI has provided a close-up look at the work and has given her a newfound appreciation for the effort and expertise required to bring these projects to life. Megan says that seeing firsthand how heavy machinery is used to shape the city is particularly interesting.
One of Megan's biggest lessons during her internship has been recognizing that learning never stops in the construction industry. "There is always more to learn and understand. Construction projects are always changing, and new obstacles are discovered, which creates new challenges," She explained. "This means everyone involved is constantly learning." Experiencing these changing conditions firsthand has helped her understand the adaptability and teamwork required to keep projects moving forward.
Another important lesson she has learned is the value of asking questions and taking advantage of opportunities to learn from others. Megan encourages future interns to be curious and not expect to have all the answers right away, emphasizing that asking questions is one of the best ways to grow professionally.
Beyond the technical experience, Megan says the people she has met have made the biggest impact on her internship experience. "My favorite part about working at SPC is getting to meet so many people with different stories and backgrounds. I've learned so much from getting to work with such amazing people," she described. Through these connections, she has gained valuable knowledge, perspectives, and mentorship that will continue to benefit her throughout her career.
