Legal Intern, Abraham Corces shares his experiences working with SPC Construction's Legal Department this Summer.

When people think of lawyers, the construction industry is not typically at the forefront of their minds. However, legal professionals play an essential role in helping firms navigate the complex challenges that come with major infrastructure projects. Behind every successful construction project is a network of contracts, regulations, permits and business relationships that require careful legal oversight.

SPC is no exception, and we are grateful for the dedication and expertise of our Legal Department. Their work with contractors, developers, engineers, project owners, and outside counsel helps ensure that projects remain compliant, protected, and on track from start to finish.

This summer, SPC welcomed Abraham Corces, a student at Fordham University School of Law, as an intern in the Legal Department. Abe was initially drawn to the field due through his interest in property, employment, and contract law. He also credits his family’s involvement in the construction industry as a source of inspiration and motivation in pursuing this path.

When he began his internship, Abe hoped to gain firsthand experience working with complex contracts and legal matters within the construction industry. He is happy to report that those expectations have been exceeded.

“Getting hands-on experience is very different from learning in the classroom,” Abe said. “Now I’m able to see what problems are actually an issue in the real world, not just in theory.”

Throughout the summer, Abe has been immersed in a wide range of legal work that provides a realistic view of what an in-house legal career looks like. His day-to-day responsibilities include reviewing, drafting, and editing contracts, as well as assisting with litigation review alongside internal and outside counsel. This hands-on approach has allowed him to contribute to meaningful projects while developing practical legal skills.

While the legal work has been rewarding, Abe says the people have made the experience especially memorable.

“I’m lucky to say that my favorite part of my internship has been my boss, Marc Zaretsky, SVP of Legal.” He shared. “We get along really well, and he has taught me so much about transactional law, in-house, and professional life in general.”

“Abe has been a tremendous asset to the SPC Legal Department this summer. He approaches every opportunity with enthusiasm, works diligently, and is always willing to learn and take on new challenges. It has been a pleasure working with him, and I’m excited to see where his career takes him.”

SPC’s internship program is designed to give students meaningful exposure to their chosen fields and provide an authentic look at potential career paths. By trusting interns with real responsibilities and opportunities to learn from experienced professionals, the program helps bridge the gap between education and the workforce.

“The best part about working at SPC is the great connections I have made since being here." Abe explained. "Between my supervisor, other attorneys, folks around the office, and of course fellow interns, there is no shortage of great people to work with.”

As his summer internship continues, Abe is gaining not only valuable legal experience, but a deeper understanding of the effort required to support successful construction projects. We are thankful for his contributions to the Legal Department and look forward to seeing his future success.
